Coping With Quarantine – What Have I Been Up To…

While it is understandable that during this turbulent time, we need to stay in quarantine to protect ourselves & our loved ones, after a time it can be a bit overwhelming. Different people are utilizing this quarantine period in various ways. Some are getting reacquainted with their old hobbies, while some are getting creative, & others are taking up new activities such as baking, gardening, etc. I, personally, am using this time to do lots of activities such as spring cleaning and wardrobe detox and others. Let me share with you how I am coping with quarantine.

SPRING CLEANING + Wardrobe Detox!

SPRING CLEANING + Wardrobe Detox

Since I am left with a lot of time to myself, I have no excuse to not spring clean my house. After all, I am spending a LOT more time in the house. It’s not just my home, but I am taking special care to spring clean my wardrobe. I would like to share a few tips in this regard, which you might find helpful. If you want you can see practical & detailed tips on how to declutter & organise your wardrobe check out my video – COMING OUT OF THE CLOSET | CLEAN UP WITH ME | SHPOCK DEPOP | modestsisterz wardrobe detox | 2020 for more on my actual wardrobe. for my blog lovers, I have listed some extras for you below:

It is one of the most difficult yet necessary steps towards spring cleaning – purging. We all have that one or two items in our wardrobe that we find difficult to part ways with. However, it is! It’s time to toughen up & say goodbye to that item that you don’t wear anymore. see it as a deal – trading the old for space = rooms for something new that you will love just as much! Thank me later 🙂

The 3 months rule

If we haven’t worn an item for the last 3 months, most probably we are not going to wear it as often as necessary for it to need a space in your wardrobe. Therefore, it is wise to remove them from the wardrobe. Given that trends are always on a cycle, you can consider moving these items to a separate room/suitcase/rail. So, you can go shopping in your house next time you need to jazzy things up again. Especially if you are a quality over quantity kinda girl meaning nothing is actually wrong with the pieces, you might find this particular item useful after a year. TIP put them in vacuum storage packs… Vacuum packs are great as they take very little space.

Donate cloths

For the items you don’t like anymore but they are still in a very good condition, you may donate them. The wonderful your trash is my treasure fulfilled! Selling on platforms like Depop, Shpock & eBay really can help you get a little cash back to your wallet. You can also use these platforms to trade or buy new but second-hand items from others on the platform… a wonderful ecosystem of sustainable fashion.

Back to wardrobe decluttering & organising… Now that you have completed your wardrobe detox, don’t forget to dust up inside the wardrobe itself for an all-round spring clean. The shelves, the boxes, the rods & hooks, & hangers, & clean the base as well! You will be surprised how much this changes the look & fill of your wardrobe as well as your mood towards it.

Organize wardrobe

Once you have cleaned your wardrobe or closet, it’s time to put your clothes back into them. Place the clothes, shoes, & other items that you plan on using frequently within reach. On the other hand, you can store the items of later use (that you have already vacuum packed) in storage units such as boxes outside your reach such as top shelves. Now that is taken care of, use the most of your wardrobe or closet by organizing your clothes. You can try the popular folding method – Konmari. Such folding methods ensure that your clothes take as little place as possible in the drawers. Whether it is smaller items such as socks, undergarments, or larger items such as t-shirts, shirts, jeans, or tops, you can fold them effectively & store them in drawers, thereby utilizing all the space in your wardrobe.  You can organize them by colours or by category, so you can easily find them while you are in a hurry.

Back to what I have been up to… apart from spring cleaning and wardrobe detox, I am taking time to learn more about the wonderful world of sustainable fashion. On top of my list of things researched & trailed is ‘Depop – “a social shopping platform that’s a little bit eBay & a little bit Instagram… designed to closely mimic the latter. Users have profile pages that function as mini digital storefronts, where they post pictures & descriptions of what they’re selling, along with a price”. Honestly, it’s no exaggeration when I say I will never buy anything brand new before checking on Depop. It has everything for every budget – even brand new with tags items (often referred to as BNWT). It’s such a great platform for diverse fashion with reduced waste. Watch for a detailed Youtube video on how to get the most out of Depop coming soon.

Nothing is better than connecting with nature during this quarantine. I am now a proud Mother of the following house plants Ficus Robusta, Variegated Pink Princess Philodendron, White Princess Philodendron,  Alocasia Zebrina Variegated, Bamboo Tree, Variegated String of Pearls, Peace Lily, Sansevieria Masoniana Whale Fin, Begonia Maculata, & Yucca Elephantipes.

Studies have shown indoor plants can:

  • Boost mood, productivity, concentration & creativity – basically make you happy(ier)
  • Reduce stress, fatigue, sore throats & colds
  • Clean indoor air by absorbing toxins, increasing humidity & producing oxygen
  • Add life to a sterile office, give privacy & reduce noise levels
  • Therapeutic & cheaper than buying an already dying flower!!
